A Long Shadow and A Sleeping Cat – Short Stories (Translated from Bengali)

Born on the 30th of August 1951, in village Dhulihar, near Satkhira, Bangladesh, he is regarded as one of the doyens of the contemporary literary field of short stories and novels. His first short story was published in 1974. Since then he has been writing about the lives and times of people, both urban and rural, where dreams die no sooner than they are born. Land has always been his leitmotif. His stories speak of separation, not only from one's own motherland but also from one's homestead, of familial bonds, and more importantly, a parting from the various periods in time.

He has receiveed many awards, the most prominent being Sahitya Akademi Award for Dhrubaputra in 2006, Bankim Puraskar from the Government of West Bengal for Aswacharit in 2001, among others.

He was awarded with 2022 O'Henry Prize for his short story, The Old Man of Kusumpur. His novel Dhanpatir Char has been translated into English (Whatever Happened to Pedru's Island,) from Penguin Random House.
