আমেরিকার গণতান্ত্রিক ব্যবস্থা নিয়ে আস্বস্ত হওয়ার কিছু কারণ যেমন আছে তেমনি এর চিরকালীন জাতি বৈরীতা, অর্থনৈতিক শ্রেণি বিভাজন, গোপন বর্ণবাদ ইত্যাদির কুফলও কী ব্যাপক তা সাজানো আমন্ত্রিত সফরের ‘দর্শন’ দিয়ে উপলব্ধি করা যাবে না। শুনেছিলাম, আমেরিকার স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের পরে রাষ্ট্র নায়কেরা ঠিক করেছিলেন দেশটি কৃষিভিত্তিক অর্থনীতি অবলম্বন করে একটি আধ্যাত্মবাদী রাষ্ট্র হয়ে থাকুক। কিন্তু ক্রমশ সোনা সহ অন্যান্য খনিজ বনজ সম্পদের লোভে পুঁজিবাদ সেখানে জাঁকিয়ে বসে।

শুরু হয় ভাগ্যান্বেষীদের আনাগোনা। সহজে সম্পদ আহরণ করার প্রতিযোগিতায় আদি বাসীন্দারা বিলুপ্ত প্রায় হয়ে যান। একটা সময় এসে সাম্রাজ্য বিস্তার করতে নানা পরোক্ষ উপায়ের চাষ হয় এই আমেরিকায়। আজকের আধিপত্যবাদী আমেরিকা তার-ই চূড়ান্ত রূপ। লেখক আমেরিকার অর্থনৈতিক, রাজনৈতিক ও সামাজিক অবস্থানটি নিজের চল্লিশ বছরের অভিজ্ঞতায় সহজ ভাবে এঁকেছেন। এই বইটি আসলে মোহাবিষ্ট বাঙালিকে মোহমুক্ত করার আহ্বান।

There is both fear and respect between Bengalis and other Indians about America. That America is a ‘dream place’ is evident in the affirmative responses of the average Bengali young woman. But smart thinking citizens of this country see America in different ways. Their attitude towards this country is leaning towards leadership.

While there are some reasons to be concerned about America’s democratic system, the extent of its perpetuated racial animosity, economic class division, latent racism, etc., cannot be grasped through the ‘philosophy’ of an arranged invitational tour. I heard that after the American War of Independence, the state leaders decided that the country should adopt an agricultural economy and become a spiritualist state. But gradually, with the greed of gold and other mineral and forest resources, capitalism struck roots.

The traffic of fortune seekers began. In the competition for easy extraction of resources, the original inhabitants almost became extinct. At one time, various indirect ways were cultivated in this America to expand the empire. Today’s hegemonic America is its ultimate form. The author simply paints the economic, political and social situation of America in his forty years of experience. This book is actually is a call to break the illusion of the starry-eyed Bengali.
